Abstract: The heat stagnation curve between resistance and temperature on a quenched and cryogenically treated 23Co14Ni12Cr3 steel during continuously heating and cooling has been measured by a kind of resistance instrument with high precision and stability. The results have shown that the curve appeared an abnormal terrace phenomenon in the course of heating, within the temperature range corresponding to the terrace, the formation and growth of both cementite and M 2C carbides in the steel made the content of carbon in matrix obviously vary. It is in the region of terrace that the optimum combination of tensile strength and fracture toughness was obtained because of secondary hardening. Based on the measured heat stagnation curve, several transformation points have precisely been obtained and the correction was verified by X ray diffraction and transmission electron microscope (TEM) test. The influence of the heating rate and the tempering temperature on the crystal structure and stability of martensite and austenite has deeply been studied.
