Abstract: Laboratory experiments were made during the period from April 1961 to May 1963on the selection of resistance in the susceptible laboratory colony of Culex pipiens pallensof Nanking strain (NS) to methyl dipterex and also on the methods to control the mos-quitoes that had developed resistance to chlorinated hydrocarbons. The results aresummarized as follows: 1. To develop resistance to methyl dipterex in this species failed through the selec-tion in the larval stage to the 40th generation. The median lethal concentrations (LC_(50))of the early fourth-instar larvae of each generation to this organophosphorus insecticidewas found to be within the range of 0.04--0.09 ppm, being rather close to that of theNS strain (0.04--0.085 ppm). Cross-resistance tests indicated that the larvae were alsonot resistant to DDT and BHC. 2. The killing power of methyl dipterex to BHC- and DDT-resistant larvae whichwere selected with this insecticide at the 9th and 13th generation was found to besimilar to that of the larvae of NS strain. It shows that methyl dipterex possesses goodeffect against these chlorinated hydrocarbon-resistant strains.
