Abstract: The Chinese army worm (Pseudaletia separata (Walker) is a widely distributed seriouspest of field crops in China. Laboratory and field expriments for the control of this wormwere conducted in Peking and Honan Province with DDT, BHC, aldrin, dieldrin, chlordanetoxaphene, and their mixtures during 1956--1957. The. results of experiments indicatedthat a mixture containg 5 per cent DDT and BHC of 0.5 per cent of gamma isomerin the form of dust at the ratio 1:1 or 1:2 applied at the rate of 22.5 kilo per hectregive quickest and highest kill. The mixture has higher efficiency against the army wormthan DDT alone. BHC dust containing 0.5 to 3 per cent of gamma isomer has almost noeffect against the older larvae. A mixture of 5 or 10 per cent toxaphene plus 0.5 or 1per cent BHC at the ratio 1:1 has also better control than toxaphene alone. The susce-ptibility of different instars to different insecticides was studied, their resistance to the toxicaction increased as the insect developed. Field control demonstrations on large scale (using above formulation) were conductedin Peking and Honan province with very successful result. Army worm population wasreducted 95 to 100 per cent after 1--2 days when a mixture of 5 per cent DDT plus 0.5or 1 per cent gamma BHC dust at ratio 1:1, or 1:2 applied at the rate of 22.5 kilo perhectre. 5 per tent DDT or 5 per cent dieldrin dust at the rate of 22.5 kilo per hectregive also good control, but 3 per cent gamma BHC dust appear to be less effective.
