Abstract: In order to understand the abrasiveness of coal to mining machinery and its mechanism, abrasive wear tests have been made in a modified M-200 tester with steel of different carbon contents, using mining run coal, float coal and coal with different quartz contents as abrasives. The results show that when hardness ratio of coal to material, H_a/H_m, is greater than 0.64, the material experiences hard abrasive wear. However, the abrasive mechanism of coal is different from that of other abrasives, in that elasto-plastic deformation of coal grains takes place and causes the removal of material in the way of plowing-plastic squashing and flatteningcracking, which is similar to fracturing mechanism of plastic metals, little direct micro-cutting phenomenon occurs. The wear rate of materials is linearly proportional to quartz content in coal.
