Abstract: Errors in collocation are fairly common among English learners. Through an analysis of the “ structure－ system” proposition by Firth, this paper concludes that collocation in English is mainly determined by the semantic system constraint which manifests itself in logical inferences, lexical properties and semantic themes. An understanding of the semantic constraint may help teachers improve their students′ accuracy in the use of the English language.
