Abstract: Rabbits under urethane anesthesia were infused with 0.9% or 0.8% NaClsolution at constant rate for maintaining a state of hydration. In these animalsthere was a steady renal excretion of water and sodium. However, after a 10-minute unilateral electroacupuncture of the points corresponding to "Sanyinjao"and "Zhaohai" in human leg as described in Chinese Traditional Medicine causeda marked increase in urine flow, urinary sodium excretion and osmolar clearancein both isotonic and hypotonic saline infused animals, but had no significant effecton urinary sodium concentration. After bilateral cervical vagotomy or dener-vation of bilateral renal nerves the effect of electroacupuncture mentioned aboveno longer appeared. This action of electroacupuncture on urinary sodium excretionand osmolar clearance is mediated by vagus and renal nerves.
