Abstract: The authors have published in their previous papers the mechanism and treatment of the Brown-Sequard's epilepsy. They have also reported a new phenomenon, the sudden death of the animal while the fur over the epileptogenous zone was being cut. In the present paper, they report their observations on the level of blood ammonia content and the therapeutic effect of sodium glutamate. In the pre-convulsive state, the average blood ammonia content is 60/μg%. In the convulsive state, the average blood ammonia content is 245.8/μg%. In the shock state, while the fur over the epileptogenous zone was being cut, the average blood ammonia content is 384.9 μg%. Sodium glutamate is effective in preventing the generalized convulsions. The average blood ammonia content during manual stimulation of the epileptogenous zone is 76.8μg% after administration of sodium glutamate as compared with the much higher level in the group without this medication. Sodium glutamate prevents or renders less severe the shock state and the average blood ammonia content while cutting the fur is 123.8μg% which is also considerably lower than the corresponding group not receiving the medication. The changes of blood ammonia content, the role of ammonia in the production of this experimental epilepsy and the therapeutic effect of scdium glutamate are discussed.
