Abstract: Glasses with index gradient were prepared by both Na~+-Li~+ and Ag~+-Na~+ ionexchange processes. The Na_2O-and Ag_2O-concentration distribution was determined using electron microprobe, from which the Na~+-Li~+ and the Ag~+-Na~+ interdiffusion coefficients were evaluated. The refractive-index distribution in glass was determined by shearing-interference method. The penetration depth of Na~+ ions in the experimental lithia-magnesiasilica glass, which has been ion-exchanged in 95 NaNO_3-5 Na_2SO_4(wt%) at 400 ℃ for 196 h, is about 1.26 mm. △ n between the surface and the interior of the glass exchanged for 60 h is-0.026. The penetration depth in the lithia-magncsia-alumina-silica glass, which has been ion-exchanged in the same melt at 420℃ for 180 h, is about 1.40 mm. With the increz ase of the Na_2O relative concentration in glasses, the Na~+-Li~+ interdiffusion coefficients at 400 ℃ in the former and in the latter increase from 10~(-10) to 10~(-8) cm~2s~(-1) and from 2.3×10~(-11) to 2.4×10~(-9) cm~2s_(-1) respectively. After immersion in AgCl melt at 490 ℃ for 124 h, the penetration depth of Ag~+ ions in soda-alumina-silica glass reaches 2.70 mm, △n is 0.024, with the increase of the Ag_2O relative concentration, the Ag~+-Na~+ interdiffusion coefficent increases from 9×10~(-9) to 1.8×10~(-8) cm~2s~(-1).
