Abstract: Purpose To evaluate the clinical application o f helical CTthree-dimensional (3D) reconstruction in the upper airway diseases . Methods Helical CT was performed with 3.0mm slice thickness at pitch 1.0~1.2 in 36 patients with upper airway diseases. The upper airway sha ded surface display (SSD), RaySum and integrated 3D images were processed respec tively. Results SSD image could display the normal shape of t he upper airway, and provide a panoramic view of the airway compression by lesio n from multiple views, RaySum was better to investigate the internal margin of t he narrowed airway, and the airway appeared normal in 9 (25%) cases. The involve d extents of the tumor detected on SSD image was significantly smaller than that of axial and MPR images. The integrated 3D image could clearly demonstrate the relationship between the tumor and adjacent structures such as vessels and airwa y. Conclusion Helical CT 3D reconstruction can provide a three -dimensional image of upper airway diseases, and is a good complementary met hod of axial and MPR images.
