Abstract: Objective To study the association of cytomegalovirus (CMV) with atherosclerosis. Methods CMV wasdetected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and its distribution in carotid artery and coronary artery as well as in the bloodwas examined, which was compared with control subjects. Resolts 83. 8%86. 7% of the samples obtained fromatherosclerotic patients' arterial walls were shown to contain viral nucleic acid (CMV), while CMV could be found only in 6.6 % of the patients' arterial walls without atherosclerosis. The difference was statistically significant (P〈 0.01 ). CMV wasfound in blood among 42.4% of the patients with atherosclerosis, while only 3% of the samples in the control group hadCMV with significant difference again (P<0.01). Conclusion CMV plays an important role in the pathological process ofthe athersclerosis and the atherosclerotic cerebral infarction.
