Abstract: <正> Beijing's famous hutongs, narrow alleys filled with brick-walled tile-roofed courtyard houses, are some of the most distinctive symbols of China's heritage. By some estimates, about 3,200 hutongs remain in Beijing today. The length of a hutong varies from 10 to 100 meters, with the narrowest one only less than one meter wide.
