Abstract: Since 1978, Shanxi's international scientific and technological cooperation and exchange is gaining ever more momentum; a total of 38 countries and regions have established steady science and technology relations, with 21 having official government to -- government contractual cooperation involving over 50 projects. Over the last 20 odd years, a total of more than l, 300 people have been sent abroad either to study for diplomas or to do research as visiting scholars, with a large number of them having returned home and becoming backbone forces in their respective fields of study. In addition, a couple of large -- scale international workshops were held, confirming Shanxi's standing in certain academic fields. International scientific and technological cooperation is a boon to Shanxi's economy in that: 1. Quite a number of pure academic projects have lead up to the across -- the board efforts including, among other areas, technology, trade and manufacture; 2. An impetus has been given to social development and technological progress; and 3. Some returnees have come up with a bunch of research results on a par with international standards, promising high economic benefits.
