Abstract: High oxidation resistance at 1400℃ in a flow of air was successfully obtained by a coating of oxide thin film of either zircon(ZrSiO4) or mullite(3Al2O3.2SiO2)coupled with thin layer with a gradient of SiC concentration on the surface of carbon material.SiC concentration gradient was formed by a direct dipping into a melt of Si metal at 1450℃.Oxide thin films of zircon and mullite were formed through sol-gel process. The control of the hydrolysis rate was a key to the production of a homogeneous thin film.Mullite coating was more effective than zircon coating. The isotropic high-density graphite block with SiC concentration gradient and mullite coating had enough resistance to oxidation at 1400℃ in air and to quenching from 1400℃ to liquid nitrogen temperature.
