Abstract: Objective:To determine the following factors: site and degree of the post-excisional defect,type of reconstruction-influence the speech spectrum of 32 patients who underwent unilateral segmental mandibulectomy and its reconstruction.Methods: Contrasted to the speech data of 10 normal university students,the speech spectrum of the discarded sound "/s/" of the 32 patients who underwent unilateral-segmental-mandibulectomy was investigated.The patients were compared according to the following factors: position of the defects(HCL and oms classification);type of reconstruction(reconstruction with osteocutaneous flap plus plates,with plates only,with soft tissues) and whether the continuity kept or not.And the acoustical analysis of the sound "/s/"was done by means of Computerized Speech Lab 4400.changes of VOT and centre frequency in energy concentrating area were analysised. Results: Comparing to pro-operation group,when seen in the spectrographs of the post-operation patients,frequency lines became light and confusion,the belts of frequency became narrow,they seemed to be improved as the time passed on The degree of VOT reduction of the consonant /s/ in the Hm group after operation was more significant than that of Ho group,and it was nearly the same results with the central frequency changed in energy concentrating area(P<0.05).There was no significant difference between all the other groups(P>0.05).
