Abstract: OBJECTIVE:To study the characteristics of the alteration of Survivin and E-cadherin protein expressions in concurrent carcinomas of the esophagus and gastric cardia from the same patient(CC).METHODS:Survivin and E-cadherin protein expressions were detected by immunohistochemical method(ABC) in 15 patients with concurrent esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(SCC) and gastric cardia adenocarcinoma(GCA).RESULTS:In 15 CC patients, the positive immunostaining for Survivin and E-cadherin protein expressions was observed both in SCC and GCA tissues with different degrees. The positive immunostaining rate for Survivin was 71%(10/14) in SCC,and 33%(5/15) in GCA;the abnormal expression rate for E-cadherin was 93%(13/14) in SCC,and 93%(14/15) in GCA.The high coincidence rates for Survivin and E-cadherin were observed in SCC and GCA from the same patient, and accounted for 58%(8/14) and 86%(12/14),respectively.CONCLUSION:The possibility of similar molecular basis and risk factors is involved in SCC and GCA.
