Effect of Hyperbaric Oxygen with Tetramethylpyrazine on NSE and MBP in Newborns with Severe Hypoxic and Ischemic Encephalopathy

Abstract: Objective To investigate effect of the hyperbaric oxygen(HBO) therapy with tetramethylpyrazine on the level of the neuron specific enolase(NSE) and myelin base protein(MBP) in newborns with severe hypoxic and ischemic encephalopathy(HIE).Methods Ninety newborns with HIE were randomly divided into three groups:Tetramethylpyrazine group(n=30),HBO with tetramethylpyrazine group(n=WTBZ30) and conventional therapy group(n=30).Thirty normal neonates were selected as control group.The serum NSE and MBP were measured by ELISA before and after treatment.Results The level of NSE and MBP in the hypoxic and ischemic encephalopathy group were significantly higher than that in control group(P<0.05).Following treatment,the level of NSE and MBP in the tetramethylpyrazine group and HBO with tetramethylpyrazine group were lower than that in the conventional therapy group(P<0.05).The level of NSE and MBP in the HBO with tetramethylpyrazine group were lower than that in the tetramethylpyrazine group(P<0.05).Conclusion The concentration of serum NSE and MBP could be used as an index for appraising the brain injure severity of HIE and HBO treatment was benefit to the patient with HIE.
