Abstract: Objective To study the effect of electric acupuncture on level malondialdehyde(MDA) and superoxide dismutase(SOD) of brain tissue in rats with acute focal cerebral ischemia. Methods Forty-eight rats were divided into acupuncture therapy group, model group and control group.Focal cerebral ischemia was induced by photochemistry.Contents of MDA and SOD in brain homogenate were tested at 3 h and 24 h.The degree of neurological impairment was examined by Zea Longa law. Results MDA contents increased at 3 h after brain ischemia and increased significantly at 24 h.MDA contents in the acupuncture group decreased significantly from(4.02±0.31) nmol/L to (1.971±0.11) nmol/L(P<0.05) at 24 h.Compared with the model group SOD activity rose significantly at 24 h(P<0.05).After 24 h,the score of neurological impairment had obvious negative correlation with level of MDA and obvious positive correlation with activity of SOD in brain homogenate. The degree of neurological impairment in electric acupuncture therapy group was obviously lower than that in model group. Conclusion Acupuncture could protect ischemia of brain and neurological function in acute focal cerebral ischemia.
