Abstract: Objective To analyze related information of syringe exchange and methadone maintenance treatment(MMT) among drug abusers, and to provide evidence for the development and evaluation of interventions to reduce HIV prevalence among this group of population. Methods A baeline survey was conducted in 4 municipal mandatory detoxification centers in Yunnan, which were selected randomly between January and March of 2007.Three hundred and twenty four drug users were investigated by anonymous questionnaires. Results Of the 324 drug users studied,75 had had syringe-sharing behavior, which accounted for 33.48%(75/224) of the whole local IDUs.Their syringes came manily from pharmacies and clinics.Of the studied IDUs 24.55%(55/224) received syringe exchange, and the difference in the rates of accepting syringe exchange between different sex and age groups was significant(P<0.01 respectively),but no significant difference was seen in subjects with different marriage status(P>0.05).Of the drug addicts surveyed 18.21%(59/324) received MMT.The difference in the rates of accepting MMT between different sex groups was significant,so was between groups of different marriage status(P<0.05 respectively),but no significant difference was seen between different age groups(P>0.05).Conclusion The awareness of reducing drug related risk among drug abusers should be enhanced, and public education and interventions should be strengthened by multi-sector cooperation.
