Abstract: Histone methylation is a universal and important way of epigenetic modification in cells and is completed by the histone methyltransferase. It has been known for a considerable time that histone protein can be modified by methylation. However, its functions remain elusive until the histone-modifying enzymes were recently identified. With the advances on the biology of histone methylation, it is becoming clear that histone methylation plays widely biological functions. This article intends to review the recent research progress in histone methyltransferase, the function of histone methylation and the relationship between histone methylation and DNA methylation.
