Abstract: Objective To investigate the relationship between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and the pathogenesis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).Methods By using general polymerase chain reaction (PCR),the HPV positive rate and HPV gene type were determined in 60 cases of NSCLC and 30 cases of lung benign diseases.Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of P53 and Rb in lung cancer tissue. Results HPV DNA was detectable in 35.0 % of NSCLC specimens and 3.3 % of benign diseases specimens by PCR with the difference being significant between them (P<0.05). HPV positive rate of squamous cell carcinoma (48.6 %) was significantly higher than that in adenocarcinoma (13.0 %,P<0.05) and that of early stage (48.5 %) was significantly higher than that in advanced stage (18.5 %,P<0.05). HPV positive rate in smoking group (47.4 %) was significantly higher than that in non-smoking group (13.6 %,P<0.05). The positive rate of P53 and Rb in 60 cases of lung cancer were 56.7 % and 70 % respectively. There was no significant difference in the expression of them between HPV positive group and HPV negative group. Conclusion HPV infection may play an important role in the pathogenesis of NSCLC.
