A numerical simulation study on the effect of changes in beam parameters on pulse shortening in RBWOS

Abstract: In the field of high power microwave devices, pulse shortening phenomenon hindering the improvement of microwave output energy is still an unresolved problem. In this paper, we study the influence of changes in the electron beam parameters upon pulse shortening in the relativistic backward wave tube ( RBWO ) by means of the particle-in-cell method.The research indicates that the expansion of the beam generated from the cathode is not a primary factor causing pulse shortening, when the pulse width is less than 100 nS. However, when the pulse width is much longer, the factor is important.Furthermore, the fluctuation of the beam voltage and current can cause pulse shortening.
